| Matthew Fisken, of Lyme, checks radio frequency electromagnetic fields at Norwich's Lewiston Lot, where a smart meter was recently installed by Green Mountain Power. |
The Man: Matthew Fisken, 32 of Lyme.
The Cause: The effects of electromagnetic fields, especially those generated by smart meters, on human health
The Means: smartermeters.blogspot.com and youtube.com/smartermeters
The Impetus: A couple of years ago, Fisken started experiencing headaches, a ringing in his ears, and a general lack of focus that made it difficult to work. Eventually he tied those symptoms, which occurred only in certain places, to high radio frequency electromagnetic fields. When he learned tat so-called smart meters would soon replace analog electric meters in Vermont, a cause was born.
"To be realistic, I know that wireless devices aren’t going away and that electricity is a necessary fact of life. What I’m working towards, and what I’m hoping will happen, is that we’ll move in a direction of better understanding and being more accepting that health problems can be caused by EMFs (electromagnetic fields). I’m fighting it in what I think is a nontraditional way. I’m not exactly out there picketing or doing large actions that are trying to get the attention of large groups of people. But I am trying to create an additional awareness through my blog and YouTube that I think is an appropriate amount of action. I have to remember to continue living my life and not let this issue consume me. I think that’s always going to be the balance, and is probably the balance for most people who are passionate about an issue and actively try to change anything in the world. But obviously, it’s hard for me to completely detatch, because I experience it and live it on a daily basis. ... I think that’s what I’m advocating the most, not to throw away technology, not to completely give up on these advances that we’ve made, but to understand better how they are working."
