Microwave radiation isn't carcinogenic - Don Hoernschemeyer, Ph.D., ret. research chemist (opinion)

The Sunday, June 17, Opinion section of the paper carried a misleading article by Joshua Hart. In the first paragraph it claims that "microwave radiation [is] a Class 2B carcinogen according to the World Health Organization."

I can find no corroboration of this, and conclude that it is false.

The WHO fact sheet N183 on "Electromagnetic fields & public health" says nothing about health hazards from common microwave radiation. Nowhere does WHO identify them as carcinogenic. The Wikipedia encyclopedia has a current list of Group 2B carcinogens identified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer: all the entries are chemicals -- none are microwaves.

Don Hoernschemeyer, Ph.D., retired research chemist, Aptos

To clarify for Dr. Hoernschemeyer and anyone else who is confused, all microwaves (300 Mhz - 300 Ghz) are radio frequencies. Radiofrequency electromagnetic fields are a IARC Group 2B Carcinogen, listed between Propylthiouracil and Refractory ceramic fibres on Wikipedia's list.

It's curious that a scientist with such a deep understanding of the biological effects of material toxins would have such a hard time finding information relating to the IARC's reclassification of RFEMF a little more than a year ago.
